About the Psoriasis Disease

Scientifically - Psoriasis is a genetic, non-contagious chronic skin disorder, believed to effect approximately 7% of the general population. Most researchers agree that psoriasis is caused by the immune system, which is somehow mistakenly triggered, and speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell matures and falls off the body's surface in 28 to 30 days. But a psoriatic skin cell takes only three to four days to mature and move to the surface. Instead of falling off (shedding), the cells pile up and form the lesions.

Medically - There are several forms of psoriasis characterized by the location of effected skin on the body and by its appearance; each requires a different course of treatment. The disease is classified as follows:

Body Psoriasis - Plaque psoriasis (most common); Guttate psoriasis (red spots); Inverse psoriasis (skin folds); Pustular psoriasis (blisters); headerErythrodermic psoriasis (large redness areas)

There is also Scalp psoriasis, Genital psoriasis, and psoriasis of the Face, Hands & Nails.

Treatments - Unfortunately psoriasis currently has no cure. Though there are many varieties of therapy to reduce, or nearly eliminate the symptoms . However - most available medical treatments (such as injections, pills, and syrup) do not provide sufficient lubrication to the skin, which in turn leaves the skin very dry irritated and itchy.

If left untreated, the dry skin could lead to more difficult relapse on the next outbreak. It is therefore recommended to keep the psoriasis skin properly lubricated.
