About the Psoriasis DiseaseScientifically - Psoriasis is a genetic, non-contagious chronic skin disorder, believed to effect approximately 7% of the general population. Most researchers agree that psoriasis is caused by the immune system, which is somehow mistakenly triggered, and speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell matures and falls off the body's surface in 28 to 30 days. But a psoriatic skin cell takes only three to four days to mature and move to the surface. Instead of falling off (shedding), the cells pile up and form the lesions. Medically - There are several forms of psoriasis characterized by the location of effected skin on the body and by its appearance; each requires a different course of treatment. The disease is classified as follows: Body Psoriasis - Plaque psoriasis (most
